In June 2017, two years after cooling tower regulations were put into place, an outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease took place in the Lenox Hill area. While the source of the outbreak is still being investigated, preliminary evidence suggests the source was cooling towers. There have been six confirmed cases of Legionnaire’s from the outbreak so far – three people are hospitalized and one has died. The person who died was in their 90s with underlying health issues.
These are the people who are at most risk of legionella in cooling towers: the elderly and those with preexisting conditions. Others at high risk are those 50 and older who smoke, people with lung disease or weakened immune systems.
